  • Migrating to the NBN. Whats involved?

    Published June 13, 2017

All ADSL connections need to be migrated to the NBN over the next few years. This means that if you are still using an ADSL or Modem connection you need to migrate to the NBN. Northern Rivers NBN will make this transition for you as easy as it can. Whats involved - The first thing to do is to pick a plan and order it through NRNBN. You can do this online or by just picking up the phone and having a chat. It may seem that the plans for the NN service are much higher than your existing Internet service, but you must remember that this service is going to replace your internet and phone service so you wil no longer be paying line rental. With this in mind this service should work out cheaper whilst providing you a better service and greater speed. We will then Activate the NBN at your home or place of business, hopefully alongside your existing Internet connection so that you dont loose service. A modem or Router will be sent to you to plug into this new service. Alternatively one of our technicians can come to your house or place of business and connect it for you. When this new router/modem is tested as operational you can move your computer/s and devices to this new faster Internet connection. We will then move over any phones or fax services to this new connection. You can then cancel your old Internet connection, Phone Plane and Line Rental.

  • What is FTTP, FTTN, FTTB and HFC

    Published June 13, 2017

The NBN has many acronyms to describe the many ways homes are connected to this new national network. Below is a quick summary of what each of these mean. Fibre to the premises (FTTP) Fibre to the premises is when the NBN fibre connects directly to your home. This provides the best service on the NBN but of course became expensive to rollout so we find more installations with Fibre to the node (FTTN) Fibre to the node (FTTN) With FTTN, a fibre node is installed in your street or close by. From here your existing copper lines from your home is terminated at this hub. Of course with this system we can and still have some reliability issues with the old copper in certain areas. These will be presumably rectified in time. Fibre to the basement (FTTB) This type of installation is used for all apartments and flats. An NBN fibre connection is run to the "basement". From this point the existing cable within the apartment block is utilised for distribution, typically copper in older style apartments. This effectivly becomes a FTTN setup. Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial (HFC) This scenario utilises the old cable network run either by Telstra or Optus for their cable services. This netowrk had contention problems (too many users not enough network) before the NBN so the NBN will need to do a lot of work to bring this network up to speed.

  • How does my home phone work on the NBN

    Published June 13, 2017

With the roll out of the NBN the traditional copper network that our phone systems traditionally ran on is being replaced. This means that our traditional, PSTN (Telstra white phones) no longer work on the NBN network. he new network utilities a technology called VOIP (Voice Over Interent Protocol) which simply means that our phone calls now go over the Internet. Some homes may have already used technology like this with Skype and Facetime. What does this mean for me ? It means when you move to the NBN you need to either -

    • Replace your existing phone/s with new VOIP compatible phones (which you can obtain from us).
    • Purchase an adapter for your phone/s (which you can obtain from us).
    • Or purchase a router that has "phone" ports that you can plug up to 2 standard phones into (again purchasable through us).
